Gas Connection Process

Connection process

We're here to make connecting your new home or business to natural gas as smooth and simple as possible. The process can be broken down into four main steps:

How gas is connected

Many homes in our network have a gas main in their street. If this is the case, it’s a simple process for a specialised team to connect natural gas to your property. The connection runs from the gas main to your property, where a gas outlet service is installed by a gas fitter and then connected to your appliances.

How your gas meter works

Your gas meter is used to safely regulate gas flow, and to accurately measure the volume of gas you use. Your meter will be read at frequent intervals (generally, every quarter) to ensure accurate billing. The location of your gas meter is determined by a number of factors (one being that it must be easily accessible by our gas meter readers), and we always consider where you prefer this to be installed in our assessment. To request a meter position assessment, call our team on 1300 001 001 (contact hours: Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm AEST) or contact us.

As part of our commitment to safety, and also to comply with regulatory requirements regarding the accuracy of your gas meter, we replace gas meters roughly every ten years (depending on the meter type). This work will generally be completed by our network operator APA Group (or by one of their subcontractors) and a letter will be sent to the household in advance. 

In some states, we are also required to test your gas pipes for leaks at the same time. There is no charge for this service, but if a leak is found, your gas supply will not be reconnected and it will be your responsibility to arrange any repairs.
