What is Renewable Gas?

 

Renewable Gas is either hydrogen or biomethane which are produced, and can be used for heating, with zero additional emissions.  

Our hydrogen is separated from water via a process called electrolysis, using renewable electricity, such as solar and wind.  Biomethane is captured directly from biomass and organic waste facilities. Hydrogen and biomethane can be blended with natural gas and used in homes or businesses.

Blending renewable gases with natural gas is the first step to a fully decarbonised gas network.

Natural gas is already significantly cleaner than grid electricity and over 6.5 million Australian households love the performance of gas appliances for heating, cooking and hot water.  But to help meet Australia’s Energy Challenge, we are leading the transition to renewable gas.

By converting renewable electricity to renewable gas, we can store vast amounts of energy within the gas network for use at anytime, including when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing. There is no need to invest billions of dollars in the electricity grid or build massive battery farms, by continuing to use the current gas infrastructure which during winter delivers the same amount of energy as the electricity network.

And of course, customers can continue to choose the gas appliances they love for cooking, hot water and heating because of their performance, control and reliability.

The Energy Challenge

Hydrogen Park South Australia

 

Located at the Tonsley Innovation District, HyP SA is an innovative energy project that will produce renewable hydrogen. A 1.25MW electrolyser will be used to produce renewable hydrogen for blending up to 5% with natural gas. This will be supplied to more than 700 existing homes and businesses in Mitchell Park.
