Sunday we sang the Indelible Grace version of “Upon a Life I Have Not Lived<\/a>.” The original version was written by Horatius Bonar in 1881 as a communion hymn. On merit not my own I stand;
\nOn doings which I have not done,
\nMerit beyond what I can claim,
\nDoings more perfect than my own.<\/p>\n

Upon a life I have not lived,
\nUpon a death I did not die,
\nAnother’s life, Another’s death,
\nI stake my whole eternity.<\/p>\n

Not on the tears which I have shed:
\nNot on the sorrows I have known,
\nAnother’s tears, Another’s griefs,
\nOn them I rest, on them alone.<\/p>\n

Jesus, O Son of God, I build
\nOn what Thy cross has done for me;
\nThere both my death and life I read,
\nMy guilt, my pardon there I see.<\/p>\n

Lord, I believe; oh deal with me
\nAs one who has Thy word believed!
\nI take the gift, Lord look on me
\nAs one who has Thy gift received.<\/p>\n

I taste the love the gift contains,
\nI clasp the pardon which it brings,
\nAnd pass up to the living source
\nAbove, whence all this fullness springs.<\/p>\n

Here at Thy feast, I grasp the pledge
\nWhich life eternal to me seals,
\nHere in the bread and wine I read
\nThe grace and peace Thy death reveals.<\/p>\n

O fullness of the eternal grace,
\nO wonders past all wondering!
\nHere in the hall of love and song,
\nWe sing the praises of our King.<\/p>\n
